This undated manuscript seems to have been written in the early 1960s, as the dedication on page 8 cites a 1959 book. John's focus for most of his career was on teaching effective, written communication — with little emphasis on grammar — to a broad range of college freshmen, including many whose reading and writing skills were rudimentary, even remedial.
For more about John's work, see my page, Words -- written by and about John Butler, Friends, and Family, describing his career, and in particular his 1980 article, Remedial Writers.
