1940s
John's family lived at 130 Laurel Street in Newport, New Hampshire, through the 1940s. John attended school in Newport from 1939 to 1942, then spent the 1942-43 school year at the Loomis School in Windsor, Connecticut, before returning to Newport and graduating from Towle High School in 1944.
John served two and one half years with the Army Engineers, during which time he was a student at the University of Maine in Orono, and at the North Carolina State College in Raleigh. He studied at Amherst College starting in 1947, and at University of Massachusetts in the summer of 1948, before graduating from Amherst College in 1949 with a B.A. in English. He began post-graduate studies at Brown University in 1949.
1950s
In the summer of 1950 Bernard and Beulah rented an apartment over a boathouse on Lake Sunapee at the end of Job's Creek. A few months later they bought a lot that had been part of the Colgate estate on nearby Fernwood Point. There they built a "cottage" that included one large room from the old estate which became their living room. An outbuilding, the unheated "Stone House," and a stone wall also remained from the old estate.
They kept the Newport house for another 10 years but spent winter weekends and most of the warm-weather months at the cottage.
1960 and later
Starting in the early 1960s, Bernard and Beulah spent 14 winters in Florida, always for 6 months, mostly at LaPlaya Apartment Resort at Redington Beach, with the last winter (1975-76) spent at Coral Shores apartment hotel at North Redington Beach.
After Beulah died January 1, 1977, Bernard lived year-round at the cottage until his death, January 31, 1988.
