John attended high school in Newport, New Hampshire, except for his junior year, when he attended the Loomis School in Windsor, Connecticut.
In the 1944-45 school year, he attended the University of Maine in Orono, studying engineering while serving in the US Army. He turned 18 in January of 1945, and completed his Army service stateside.
