Flo's Research in Precious Metal Plating
Florence Butler was employed by Technic, Inc., of Cranston, Rhode Island, for more than 40 years. Technic is "a global supplier of specialty chemicals, custom finishing equipment, engineered powders, and analytical control systems to the semiconductor, electronic component, printed circuit board, industrial finishing, and decorative industries."
In 1984, Flo was appointed Vice President at Technic, as reported in the Providence Journal of 01-Nov-1984, responsible for overseeing research on non-precious metal plating solutions. In this capacity, she was authorized to represent the company while traveling to visit installations at customers' sites and sign contracts.
Flo's research in gold electroplating, and electroless plating, led to at least 18 patents which bear her name, along with the names of various colleagues.
Alfred M. (Al) Weisberg Flo's boss for decades, was the founder of Technic. Mark Weisberg, referenced in some of these patent descriptions, was Al's father.
In 1997, Al wrote an article,Gold Plating: A brief history and current explanation of the process.
Harry Kroll was a long-time colleague of Flo's at Technic. According to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, "Dr. Harry Kroll worked as one of the world's leading scientist and research chemists. He holds fifty-one world patents issued by the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, and France. As senior scientist for Technic, Inc., in Cranston, he has done extensive cancer research, having worked as an American Cancer Society Fellow and earlier with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission."
