In 2005, seven years after John died and after she turned 80, Flo moved to Fawnskin, California, to be closer to family. There she volunteered for the Forest Service's native plant restoration and monarch habitat enhancement programs. She continued to garden and fix all things broken. When Scott and Robin brought Ridley and Zoe into the family, Flo was there to help care for them, drive them back and forth to school, and sew clothing for them.
