David worked as a Secretary/Receptionist for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in the early 1990s. A TNC donor on Block Island offered the use of an outbuilding on their property, a converted chicken coop, for the use of TNC staff on vacation. David took advantage of the offer to spend a week on the island. He rode Amtrak from Philly to Providence, spent a night or two in Smithfield, and caught a ride with Flo to and from Block Island. She rode the ferry to the island, where David rented a bicycle, and spent one day sightseeing.
Flo and John had been long-time supporters of The Nature Conservancy, and in the early 1990s they volunteered as stewards for the Ell Pond Preserve, part of the Pawcatuck Borderlands site along Rhode Island's border with Connecticut.
